What does the premium health check include?

The premium check is our fuller health assessment. It brings together three things: an advanced blood package that looks at more than the comprehensive blood test in our standard check, a resting ECG to record your heart's rate and rhythm, and unhurried time with a GMC-registered GP; the appointment length and the fee are shown at the top of this page. Everything is explained in a written report.

The consultation is the heart of the check. The doctor goes through your history, your family history, your lifestyle, sleep and mood, examines you where it is useful, including your blood pressure, and talks through what each test is looking for and why.

Who is the premium check for?

It suits anyone who wants a broader picture of their health than the standard check gives. That often means people in their forties, fifties and beyond who have not had a proper check-up in years, people with a family history of heart disease, high cholesterol or diabetes, and anyone who would like their heart rhythm looked at as well as their blood results. It is also the right choice if an employer or insurer has asked for a medical that includes an ECG.

You may have seen this kind of appointment called a wellman check or wellwoman check elsewhere. The premium check is the same idea: a GP-led assessment for someone who feels well and wants to stay that way, with more time to talk than most.

A health check is not the place to bring a symptom that is worrying you now. If something is wrong today, book a same-day GP appointment instead — the doctor can add any of these tests to it.

What happens on the day?

Allow a little longer than the appointment length shown at the top of this page, so there is time for the blood samples and the ECG before you see the doctor. If any of the tests in the blood package need you to fast beforehand, we tell you exactly what to do when you book, and you can always drink water. Wear something comfortable that gives easy access to your chest, arms and ankles for the ECG, and bring a list of any medicines you take.

First, a clinician takes your blood samples and records the ECG. The ECG takes only a minute or two while you lie still, with small stickers placed on your chest, arms and legs. Then you have the full consultation with the GP, going through your history, family history, lifestyle and any concerns. The doctor examines you where it is useful and explains what each test is looking for.

You do not get a rushed verdict on the day. The full picture comes once the laboratory results are back, in a written report the doctor talks you through.

When will I get my results, and what happens next?

Most routine blood results are back within one to two working days; a few specialist tests take longer, and we tell you the expected time when you book. Your written report follows once every result is in and a GP has read it alongside your ECG, your examination and what you told us.

Most people receive a reassuring report with a few practical suggestions. When a result needs action, the doctor calls you to explain it and agrees a plan: a repeat test, a change to work on, a referral to a specialist, or a letter to your NHS GP with your consent. Nothing is left as a number on a page, and an urgent finding is phoned through straight away.

What is a resting ECG, and why is it included?

An ECG (electrocardiogram) is a quick, painless recording of your heart's electrical activity, including its rate and rhythm. Small stickers are placed on your chest, arms and legs for a minute or two while you lie still. It can pick up an irregular heartbeat or signs of strain that a blood test and a blood-pressure reading alone would miss.

Including an ECG is one of the ways the premium check goes further than our standard check. The doctor reads it alongside your blood pressure, your blood results and your family history to build a fuller picture of your heart health. An ECG is a snapshot of one moment: a normal trace is reassuring, but it does not rule out every heart problem, and the doctor will say so plainly if anything needs a closer look.

How does it compare with the standard well man and well woman check?

Both checks are led by the same GMC-registered GPs, both give you the same unhurried time with the doctor, and both end with a written report. The difference is in the tests.

How much does the premium health check cost, and what is not included?

The premium check is a single, all-in fee, shown on this page, with no membership to join and nothing to pay to register. It covers the advanced blood package, the resting ECG, the GP consultation, your written report and the GP's follow-up call if a result needs explaining. Referral letters written as part of the check are included.

A few things sit outside the fee, and we tell you before anything is done. Extra tests that are not part of the advanced package are priced separately and confirmed before you book; the full range is on our blood tests page. A private prescription carries a separate fee, shown on our pricing page, and the pharmacy charges its own private price for the medicine. Any specialist appointment or scan you are referred for is charged by the provider you choose.

If you are claiming on private health insurance, check first that your policy covers a routine health check, as policies vary on screening. We provide an itemised invoice either way.

How do I book and pay for the premium check?

Book online or call the practice, and reception will find an appointment that allows time for the blood samples, the ECG and the full consultation. The premium check is usually booked a few days ahead so we can tell you how to prepare; if your tests need a fasting sample, a morning slot is usually easiest. You pay at the practice, by card or cash; there is no online payment and no membership. If you are claiming on insurance, or your employer is paying, we provide an itemised invoice, and it is free to cancel or move the appointment with the notice shown on our pricing page.

Where is the clinic?

Our clinic is at the rear of Grovelands Medical Centre, 1 Grovelands Rd, Palmers Green, London N13 4RJ, a short walk from Palmers Green station on the Great Northern line and on the 121, 329 and W6 bus routes along Green Lanes. GPLine is a separate private GP practice at the rear of Grovelands Medical Centre, with its own entrance and its own telephone number, 07460 466684. Grovelands Medical Centre is an NHS practice, and London Diagnostic Centre is a separate business in the same building. Please book with us directly.

The premium check is self-pay and open to any adult. There is no membership, no registration and no need to be a patient of any other clinic at this address; you book the check you want, pay per visit, and keep your NHS GP.
