Private GP FAQs — Palmers Green, North London

Answers to common questions about seeing a private GP at GPLine — appointments and pricing, referrals and prescriptions.

What is a private GP?

A private GP is a GMC-registered family doctor you can see directly and pay for per visit, without an NHS referral or registration. At GPLine you choose the type and length of appointment and are usually seen the same day — in clinic, by video, or at home. Our how it works page explains a visit from booking to aftercare.

Do I need to register, or leave my NHS GP?

No. You do not register with us and you keep your own NHS GP. There is no joining fee and no membership — you simply book the appointment you need, online in about a minute or by calling the practice.

How quickly can I be seen?

Same-day appointments are usually available on weekdays. The booking page shows the times that are free today and over the coming weeks, in clinic in Palmers Green, by video anywhere in the UK, or at home across North London.

Will seeing you affect my relationship with my NHS GP?

No. We work alongside the NHS, not instead of it, and we encourage you to stay registered with your NHS practice.

With your consent we send a short summary of each consultation to your NHS GP — particularly if we start a new medication — so your record stays complete. Otherwise your visit stays as private as you wish.

How are your doctors regulated?

Every doctor is registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise, and works to the GMC's Good Medical Practice standards. Your records are held securely and used only as set out in our privacy notice, in line with UK GDPR. You can read more about the practice and how we work.

How much does an appointment cost, and how do I pay?

You pay per visit and every price is the full price, quoted before anything is done — no registration fee and no membership. A standard 20-minute GP appointment in clinic is £90, and a video consultation of the same length is £90. Longer appointments and every other fee are listed on our pricing page.

There is no online payment: you pay at the practice by card or cash when you come in, and we give you an itemised invoice if you are claiming on insurance.

What is included in the appointment fee?

The consultation and any examination the doctor needs to make, a private prescription written during the appointment (the pharmacy charges separately for the medicine), referral letters, fit notes and simple medical letters, and — with your consent — a summary to your NHS GP.

Laboratory tests, vaccines and some add-ons are charged separately at the rates shown, and anything not listed is quoted before it is done.

What is the difference between your two health checks?

The well man / well woman health check is a 45-minute GP consultation with a comprehensive blood test and a written report that explains your results in plain English.

The premium health check adds an advanced blood package and a resting ECG to a 45-minute GP appointment. Both fees are shown in full on our pricing page, and the doctor can suggest which check suits you.

Can you write prescriptions and referrals?

Yes. Our GPs write private prescriptions and referral letters to consultants, imaging and diagnostics, usually the same day. You choose the provider, or we can suggest one based on the problem and whether you are paying yourself or using insurance.

Do you see children?

Yes — our GPs see patients of all ages, including children, in clinic, by video or at home. When you book for someone else, you can add their details at the practice.

Can I be seen by video or at home?

Yes. As well as in-clinic appointments in Palmers Green, we offer video consultations anywhere in the UK during clinic hours, and home visits across North London — most weekdays, often the same day.

Can I get a fit note (sick note)?

Yes. A GP can issue a fit note after a consultation — in clinic, by video or at home — if they consider you unfit for work, and it is emailed to you, usually the same day. A video consultation is often the quickest way to arrange one. A fit note requested at the appointment is included in the appointment fee.

Do you do blood tests without a referral?

Yes. You can book a blood test directly, with no referral and no need to register. Tests start from £45, and the fee includes the sample being taken, the laboratory analysis and a GP review of the result. Most routine results are back within one to two working days, and a GP explains them to you rather than leaving you with a number. If you are not sure which test you need, book a GP appointment first and the doctor will advise.

Do you offer vaccinations and travel vaccines?

Yes. We give private vaccinations for adults and children — including seasonal flu, shingles, chickenpox, HPV, meningitis, hepatitis and childhood catch-up doses — and our travel clinic gives pre-travel advice and travel vaccines such as typhoid, hepatitis A and B and rabies. Both are booked by phone rather than online, so we can check the vaccine is in stock and allow the right appointment time, and the fee is quoted when you book, before anything is given. We are not a registered yellow fever centre; if your trip needs that vaccine we will direct you to one.

Do you take private medical insurance?

You pay us directly at the appointment, by card or cash, and we give you an itemised invoice and any referral letter or report your claim needs. Many private policies reimburse GP fees, but cover for routine health checks varies, so check your policy before you book. Some insurers ask for a GP referral before they will authorise a specialist or cover tests; the doctor can write that letter.

Are you the same as Grovelands Medical Centre or London Diagnostic Centre?

No. GPLine is a separate private GP practice at the rear of Grovelands Medical Centre, with its own entrance and its own telephone number, 07460 466684. Grovelands Medical Centre is an NHS practice, and London Diagnostic Centre is a separate business in the same building. Please book with us directly, online or on our own number, rather than through the surgery. The Palmers Green area guide shows exactly where the entrance is.

What should I do in an emergency?

Call 999 or go to your nearest A&E. We are a GP practice, not an emergency service, and a booked appointment is never the right route for chest pain, severe breathlessness, signs of a stroke, heavy bleeding, a seizure, or a baby or child who is floppy, hard to wake or has a rash that does not fade under a glass. When we are closed, NHS 111 gives urgent advice. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, call 999 or NHS 111 and choose the mental health option.

Is there parking?

There is no parking we can reserve for you. Grovelands Road and the streets around Aldermans Hill are residential and mostly controlled during the working day, so read the signs and allow a few extra minutes. Palmers Green station is a few minutes' walk away and buses stop on Green Lanes. If getting to us is the hard part, book a video consultation or a home visit instead.

Can I see the same doctor each time?

Yes, where the diary allows. Ask for the doctor you saw last time when you book online or by phone, and reception will look for a slot with them. We keep a secure clinical record, so if that doctor is not available another of our GPs can pick up where they left off.

What is your cancellation policy?

You can cancel or move an appointment free of charge with 24 hours' notice. Later than that, or if you do not attend, the appointment fee may be charged.

Where are you, and when are you open?

You'll find us at At the rear of Grovelands Medical Centre, 1 Grovelands Rd, Palmers Green, London, N13 4RJ, a few minutes' walk from Palmers Green station. We are open Monday to Friday, 09:00–17:00. If you cannot find a time that suits you online, call the practice on 07460 466684 and reception will look for the earliest slot.

Our contact page has a map and directions, and the Palmers Green area guide explains which entrance to use and where to park.
