How does a private blood test work?

What does having a blood test involve?

It is quick and straightforward. A trained clinician cleans a small area, usually in the crook of your elbow, and takes one or more samples into labelled tubes. It takes only a few minutes, and most people feel no more than a brief scratch. If you are nervous about needles, tell us — we can take extra time and help you stay relaxed.

Drinking water beforehand and keeping warm makes it easier to take the sample. Afterwards you can carry on with your day as normal; a small plaster is usually all you need.

Blood tests for tiredness and low energy

Do I need to fast before a blood test?

When you book, we tell you whether your test needs fasting and for how long. If you take regular medicines, carry on as normal unless the doctor has told you otherwise.

How quickly will I get my results?

Most routine results are back within one to two working days. A few specialist tests take longer, and we tell you the expected time when you book.

Your results are reviewed by one of our GPs before you hear from us. Normal results are sent to you with a short, plain-English note; anything that needs a conversation is explained in a follow-up call or appointment.

Results are sent to you by secure message, and you can ask for a copy of the laboratory report for your own records or for another clinician. If you have a deadline — an insurance form, a specialist appointment, a flight — tell us when you book and we will say honestly whether the timing works.

Why does a GP review of your results matter?

A number on its own is not an answer. Laboratory reference ranges differ, some results depend on the time of day or what you last ate, and a slightly out-of-range value is often meaningless on its own. Every result here is read by a GP who knows why you had the test and can tell you honestly whether it matters.

That review is included in the price of the test, so you are never left holding a report you cannot make sense of.

If you would like to talk a set of results through in more detail, or they raise questions about symptoms you have been having, book a GP appointment — in clinic or by video — and bring the report. The doctor can put the numbers alongside your history and examine you if that helps.

What happens if a result is abnormal?

If a result needs action, a GP calls you to explain what it means and what to do next. That might be a repeat test, a simple change to look at, a private prescription, or a referral to a specialist. Nothing is left as a number on a page.

With your consent, we can send the result to your NHS GP so your records stay complete. Some NHS practices will not act on a private result without seeing the report, so it is worth keeping a copy. An urgent or worrying result is phoned through straight away rather than waiting for a routine review.

The report is yours to keep and to share with any clinician you choose. If you would like a result sent to a specialist, a fertility clinic or an occupational health service, tell us and we will send it where you ask.
