What does the well man and well woman health check include?

The doctor goes through your history, your family history and your lifestyle, examines you where it is useful, and explains what each test is looking for and what the result means for you.

What does the premium health check add?

Both checks are led by the same GMC-registered GPs, both give you the same unhurried time with the doctor, and both end with a written report. The difference is in the tests. The premium well man and well woman health check adds a resting ECG — a quick, painless recording of your heart's rate and rhythm — and an advanced blood package that goes wider than the comprehensive blood test in the standard check.

People often choose the premium check when they have a family history of heart disease, would like their heart rhythm looked at as well as their blood results, or have been asked by an employer or insurer for a medical that includes an ECG. An ECG is a snapshot of your heart on the day: a normal trace is reassuring, but it does not rule out every heart problem, and the doctor will say so plainly if anything needs a closer look.

If you are not sure which to book, choose the standard check and tell reception what you are hoping to learn; the doctor will tell you honestly whether the extra tests would add anything for you. Who should have a health check?

Anyone who wants a clear picture of their health. It is popular with people in their forties and fifties who have not had a proper check-up in years, people with a family history of heart disease, diabetes or high cholesterol, and anyone whose employer or insurer asks for a medical. You may have seen this kind of appointment called a wellman check or wellwoman check; it is the same idea, led by a GP.

A health check is not the place to bring a symptom that is worrying you now. If something is wrong today, book a GP appointment instead — we can add any of these tests to it.

If you already have a diagnosed condition — high blood pressure, diabetes or a heart problem, say — you may be better served by an extended GP appointment that reviews it properly, and the doctor can add the blood tests you need to that. Tell reception what you are hoping to get from the check and they will help you choose.

Health checks for men and women

The core check is the same for everyone, but the conversation is tailored to you. For men, that often includes prostate health and, if you wish, a PSA blood test as an add-on. For women, it can cover menopause, bone health, and making sure you are up to date with NHS cervical and breast screening.

Whatever your age or sex, the GP spends the appointment on the things that matter most for you, from family history to lifestyle, and explains which national screening programmes you should be part of.

What happens on the day?

Allow a little longer than the appointment length shown at the top of this page, so there is time for the blood samples before you see the doctor. If any of the tests need you to fast beforehand, we tell you exactly what to do when you book, and you can always drink water. Bring a list of any medicines you take and any recent letters or results.

First, a clinician takes your blood samples, which takes only a few minutes. Then you have the full consultation with the GP, going through your history, family history, lifestyle and any concerns. The doctor examines you where it is useful, including your blood pressure, and explains what each test is looking for.

You do not get a rushed verdict on the day. The full picture comes once the laboratory results are back, in a written report the doctor talks you through.

How much does a private health check cost in North London?

The health check is a single, all-in fee, shown on this page, with no membership to join and nothing to pay to register. It covers the comprehensive blood test, the GP consultation and your written report — there is nothing else to pay for the standard check. A resting ECG is not part of the standard check; it is included in the premium check, whose fee is shown alongside this one.

If you would like extra tests, such as a PSA test, a hormone profile, a sexual health screen or allergy testing, these can be added and are priced separately; tell us when you book so the samples can be taken in one visit, and we confirm the price beforehand. You pay at the practice, by card or cash; there is no online payment. If you are claiming on private health insurance, check first that your policy covers a routine health check, as policies vary on screening; we provide an itemised invoice either way, and it is free to cancel or move the appointment with the notice shown on our pricing page.

How is this different from the NHS Health Check?

The NHS Health Check is a valuable free check for people aged 40 to 74 without certain existing conditions, offered about once every five years. It focuses on heart and circulatory risk, with a cholesterol and blood-sugar test, and does not include a broad blood panel.

Our private health check is more detailed and available to any adult, whenever you want one. It adds a comprehensive blood test and gives you an unhurried GP consultation rather than a brief appointment, with a written report at the end. If you are eligible for the free NHS check and that is all you need, we will say so.

Can I add extra tests?

Yes. Common additions include a PSA test, hormone profiles, sexual health screens and allergy testing; the full range is on our blood tests page. Because the samples can be taken in the same visit, adding a test is straightforward — just tell us what you would like when you book, and we will confirm the price beforehand.

What happens after your health check?

Most people receive a reassuring report with a few practical suggestions. When a result needs action, the doctor calls you to explain it and agrees a plan: a repeat test, a change to work on, a referral to a specialist, or a letter to your NHS GP with your consent. Nothing is left as a number on a page, and an urgent finding is phoned through straight away.

Your report comes to you in writing, so you can keep it and share it with your NHS GP, a specialist or an insurer if you wish. With your consent we send a copy to your NHS practice so your main record stays complete; some NHS practices will not act on a private result without seeing the report, so it is worth keeping your copy safe.

Health checks for employers and insurers

The report is written by a GMC-registered GP and is usually accepted by employers and insurers. If your employer or insurer has their own form to complete, send it to us in advance so we can build it into the appointment. If several colleagues need a check, call the practice and we will do our best to arrange convenient times. If the medical needs an ECG, book the premium check.
